What we check

Ten things a careful reader looks for

Each one is tied to the exact line on your bill. Clear problems are marked likely. Anything that depends on what happened is marked worth asking, never an accusation.

  1. Charges billed twiceThe same code on the same day, more than once.
  2. Quantities that don't fitThree room days for a two-night stay, or more units than make sense.
  3. Dates outside your stayCharges dated before you arrived or after you went home.
  4. Missing from your insurance statementItems your insurer may never have been billed for.
  5. Denied by your insurerCharges your Explanation of Benefits shows as denied, now billed to you.
  6. More than your insurer says you oweWhen the bill asks for more than the patient responsibility on your EOB.
  7. Possible surprise billsEmergency care, or an out-of-network doctor at an in-network hospital. The No Surprises Act may protect you.
  8. Over your Good Faith EstimatePaying yourself? A bill $400 or more above your estimate can be disputed.
  9. Coding and supplies worth asking aboutA procedure billed in pieces, an emergency visit level that looks high, routine supplies billed one by one.
  10. Financial assistanceNonprofit hospitals must have a financial assistance policy. Tell us your household size and income to see if you may qualify.

      Questions

      Good questions to ask

      Is this legal advice?

No. Billcheck is a medical bill review tool. It is not a law firm and it does not give legal or medical advice. It points out the lines worth questioning and gives you letters to send yourself. For legal advice, talk to a lawyer or your state's consumer protection office.

      Which bills work?

Itemized bills from hospitals, clinics, labs and doctors' offices, as a PDF or clear photos (JPG, PNG or WebP), up to 20 pages. An itemized bill lists each charge with a date, a description and usually a code. Add your insurer's Explanation of Benefits to check more.

What if I only have a summary bill?

The free scan tells you, and gives you a letter asking for the itemized bill. You have a right to a copy of your billing records. Once it arrives, scan it.

      Will this lower my bill?

We can't promise that. Some questions turn out to have an explanation, and some charges get corrected. What you get is a careful read, the exact lines to ask about, and the words to ask with.

What if the scan finds nothing?

Then we tell you so, and there is nothing to buy. Checkout only appears when the scan found something worth asking about.

What if my file isn't a medical bill, or can't be read?

We say so plainly, and you are not charged. Try a PDF, or brighter, flatter photos.

      Who can see my bill?

Only someone with your private link, which we email to you. Anthropic reads your files to scan them and does not train on them. Everything is deleted after 30 days, or right away when you press "Delete everything now".
